Mission Statement
“To give optimum care to the patients of male psychiatric ward”
The Male Psychiatric Ward is a long stay residential ward that is the home for twenty-eight (28) adult clients. Their ages range from eighteen (18) to eighty (80) years.
The ward consists of two units or dormitories. Their diagnosis varies from moderate to severe mental retardation, schizophrenia and other chronic disorders. Three (3) clients are mobile with the use of wheelchairs. There are also three (3) blind clients.
All clients are quite sociable and look forward to having visitors from the community. In fact, we welcome any visitors, be it from the community, the church or various organizations, it’s a grand occasion for the clients. They are easy to befriend. They love meeting and interacting with new people.
Our goals and objectives are to maintain a high quality of care for the clients and ensure their safety and well being. Perhaps some will eventually be able to reside in the community under some supervision.
Because the ward is a long stay unit, the clients actually live at Sandilands Rehabilitation Centre. Referrals will come from another ward in the institution; very seldom do we have direct admissions.
The clients have constructive programmes such as Occupational Therapy, Recreational Therapy and various ward activities such as art and craft, dance, dominoes and television watching. During the evening shifts, there is a weekly church meeting and at times, nature walks on the compound. We encourage the clients to maintain their independence as much as possible.
We would appreciate the community social interaction with our clients as this will help dispel the myths about mental illness. To reiterate, our clients are very friendly and would love to see you visit the Male Ward.
Individuals or a group can adopt the Ward. Your responsibility would consist of some of the following:
- Visit the clients as often as you can;
- Bring a small treat for them such as biscuits, fruits, drinks and other snacks; and
- Bring games like dominoes, connect four, simple (big) puzzles, coloring books, crayons and other simple games.
We also would like help during the various celebrations, for example Christmas, Easter, and Thanksgiving.
Visiting hours are Everyday: 11:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.
2:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
6:00 p.m. - 7:00 p.m.
To our friends, come and give a little love and support.
