Family Group Support
Family group support seeks to:

  • Educate and inform families about mental illness, its treatment and their role in the treatment process
  • Address topics related to unique challenges they are confronted with on a regular basis
  • Enhance communication and problem solving skills to enable caregivers to manage their relatives’ behaviour more effectively.
  • Provide an emotionally supportive, empathetic opportunity for disclosure among persons with shared goals
  • Develop a network with other parents

Service is offered to relatives, significant others and caregivers of persons diagnosed with mental illnesses.  Persons desiring to receive education about mental illness, to strengthen coping mechanisms and enhance family relationships are encouraged to call or visit Health Social Services to indicate their willingness to participate in the group.

Parenting Programme
The purpose of this programme is to:

  • Improve parenting skills
  • Increase parents knowledge of parenting and mental health  issues
  • Develop a network with other parents
  • Strengthen parent/patient relationships
  • To enhance communication and problem solving skills to enable parents to manage their loved ones’ behaviours more effectively
  • Form partnership with the facility to maintain high quality of care for patients

Service is offered to parents / guardians of juvenile patients receiving inpatient care at Sandilands Rehabilitation Centre.  To quality for this service, your child or adolescent must be an inpatient of the Child & Adolescent Ward at Sandilands Rehabilitation Centre - parents/guardians are informed of the group upon their child’s admission.  Some parents’ participation is made mandatory by the Juvenile Court; Social Workers strongly suggest that others attend as part of their child’s treatment process.

Medical Card
This card provides a means of accessing psychiatric medication by indigent persons with psychiatric conditions and other persons with insufficient financial means to cover the cost of medication prescribed by the psychiatrist.  To obtain a card, the individual must interview at the Health Social Services Office at Sandilands Rehabilitation Centre, Community Counselling & Assessment Centre or at the Psychiatric Clinics held in Princess Margaret Hospital at 12:00 p.m. on Thursdays (Males) and Fridays (Females).  A Means Assessment form will be completed by a Social Services Representative during the initial interview once the client presents a Doctor’s referral and prescription.  The Medical Card can be issued the same day for periods of 3 months, 6 months or 1 year.  In-patients requiring other medical services and tests (e.g. CT scans, ultra sound etc.) are recommended for a waiver of fees at the Princess Margaret Hospital.

Dynamic/Life Support Process Groups
The purpose of this service is to:

  • Strengthen patients’ coping mechanisms and to assist with their overall functioning in the community.
  • Help parents stay connected to the patients and serve as ongoing support throughout their rehabilitation

The service is offered to persons desirous of recovering from drug addiction and are usually referred by the court, employers, physician, Accident & Emergency at PMH, or self referred.  To obtain service, interested persons must register at the Community Counselling & Assessment Centre (present photo identification and the application form is completed by the interviewing officer) and sign a contract outlining his / her obligations and rules and regulations for their compliance.  The programme lasts for one (1) to eighteen (18) months depending on the patient’s progress and is comprised of five phases as follows:

  • Interested persons must attend four (4) Community Meetings on a weekly basis at 8:00 a.m. or 11:00 a.m.
  • Must submit to drug testing (urinalysis) on each visit
  • Upon successful completion of this first phase the patient advances to the second phase, Pre Group (Drug Education), for a period of 4 weeks. Sessions are held daily between the hours of 12:00 noon and 1:00 p.m.  Drug testing is random and is required to be negative on each occasion
  • The third phase of the program is the Dynamic Group held for four months. Sessions are held daily between the hours of 10:15 a.m. and 11:30 a.m.
  • The fourth phase of the program is the Life Support Process Group held for a period of four months. Sessions are  held on Mondays and Wednesdays from 11: 45 a.m. until 1:00 p.m. (urinalysis is random)
  • The final phase of the program is Follow-Up Group held for four months. Sessions are facilitated every Wednesday from 9:00 a.m. until 10:00 a.m.
  • After the final phase, graduation is held for successful participants
